Spring Break:
most of us automatically think of MTV dance parties, keggers and
"girls gone wild." Fortunately, California offers a variety of
family activities from snow to sun to sand. With a little
planning you can avoid the MTV crowd altogether.
Snow
Within a few
hours you can be in the snow - skiing, snowboarding, sledding, ice
skating, cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Or you can sit in a lodge
or cabin, read a book and just enjoy the solitude. In addition to Lake
Tahoe, Bear Valley, Arrowhead, Mammoth and Yosemite Valley offer a multitude of winter
activities.
Sun
A road trip
south and you can enjoy the sun, surf and sand. In addition to Los Angeles and San Diego,
which offer a plethora of family fun ideas, Santa Barbara has a number of resorts
that offer kids' club activities and babysitting. That leaves the
adults time to enjoy the Santa
Barbara wine country. You can also visit
a dude ranch in the area, or take a day trip to Solvang, a quaint
town filled with old world European charm.
Theme Parks
Take the kids
to a different theme park in your area each day. There are plenty to
choose from in both Northern and Southern
California. While the theme parks are not
inexpensive, you'll save on hotel and airfare and your kids will think you're
the best parent ever!
Camping
With California's mix
of wilderness, rolling coastal hills, and secluded beaches, you can
choose what terrain is most appealing to your family. A number of
campsites now offer a variety of accommodations including lodge rooms,
log cabins, tented cabins or B.Y.O.T (bring your own tent).
Additionally, many campsites offer horseback riding, kids camp, guided
nature hikes, storytelling, mountain biking, surfing lessons, sea
kayaking, yoga classes and gourmet stores.
Have a great time. Or should we say: Party on, Dude!
