May Calendar

5  Cinco de Mayo

El cinco de mayo ("Fifth of May" in Spanish) is a Mexican national holiday, commemorating the victory of Mexican forces over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This day has come to equal Mexico's Independence Day (September 16) in significance. Planning a fiesta this month? Let QCS make sure it's a smashing success.

11  Mother's Day

Mother's Day began in England in the 1600s, as "Mothering Sunday," when moms were honored with cake and a day off. In 1914 it was made a U.S. holiday by President Wilson. Let your mom know how much she means to you this year. QCS can be sure she has the perfect gift waiting for her on her special day.

26  Memorial Day

Memorial Day is meant to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. Keep in mind that it's more than a 3-day weekend, it's a chance to remember and give thanks to our fallen servicepeople. Why not attend a parade this year? QCS can help you find a weekend getaway that will include plenty of patriotic opportunities.

May is Teacher Appreciation Month. Need ideas for something special for a fabulous teacher? Call us, we've got great ways to say thanks!

Have other dates this month that are important to you: birthdays, anniversaries, etc.? Visit our Forget Me Not page on our website to learn how QCS can make sure no important date ever goes forgotten again.

Prepping for Finals

It's just about time for the school year to come to an end.  This means very excited young students, eager for summer vacation, who first must get through their finals.  Some students are ready while others are fearful and anxious.  There are a few things you can do to assist your student to be at their very best and ready to study.

  • List the subjects needing the most focus.
  • Use that list to create a schedule of the time needed to get prepared for each exam.
  • Organize the study space, removing distractions such as TVs, cellphones, and video games.
  • Prepare healthy meals.  Filling up on sugar isn't going to help with focus or energy levels.
  • Keep water handy as hydration is important.
  • Allow for and plan breaks.  Getting fresh air and taking a break from the books for short periods of time can really assist in keeping your student from getting overwhelmed.

Discuss a plan of action with your student, letting them tell you what they need to be successful.  By planning and working together you can really help create a plan for success.  Students will learn valuable time management skills and take this with them into their future.

The Ants Go Marching Two by Two

It's nearly the season when the pests arrive, bringing their friends and family with them to take over your home.  Here are some helpful hints from Do It Yourself Pest Control to help prevent pest invasion this summer.

  • Do not allow food, trash, or decaying wood to remain in or on your property.
  • "Weatherize" your home. Seal all possible pest entry points.
  • Keep gutters clean.
  • Keep all areas where food is prepared, stored, and served clean and free of crumbs and grease. Garbage can lids should be kept closed and secured.
  • Before storing end-of-season clothes, make sure they are clean.
  • Carefully check for pests in furniture, boxes, paper, and other items brought into your home.
  • Chimneys are frequented by squirrels, raccoons, and birds, and represent the single largest opening in a typical home. Consider chimney caps or wire mesh to cover.

Tips from our Concierges

This month our concierges have some creative and inexpensive ideas for letting Mom know just how much she means to you and the little ones this Mothers' Day (May 11).

How about creating a photo album of shots that are meaningful to Mom? Online services such as shutterfly.com or snapfish.com make you look like a scrapbooking pro with little time or expense on your part. Choose from available book templates, upload your digital photos directly from your desktop, add captions, and you have a memory book Mom will treasure forever.

Mom would love a book of IOUs. Some ideas:

  • One on one time for Mom & me to go to a movie or lunch
  • Read to Mom for 15 minutes
  • Do my homework without being asked
  • Pickup my room
  • Dust and vacuum the house
  • Make & serve a meal
  • Go for a walk on the beach together

Mom is always taking care of everyone and juggling 12 things at the same time. One of the greatest gifts a man can give the mom in his life is TIME OFF!  Run a bath, throw rose petals over the water and then pack the kids up for the evening and take them out.  Unplug the house phone and only call her cell if it's life or death!  Give mom the opportunity to do anything she would like for 2-3 hours without interruption.   This is a budget-friendly gift and one that she will really treasure.
