As I write this month's newsletter, there is a crisp
breeze coming in the window, and I hear the sounds of dry leaves
blowing around. What a difference a month makes! Fall is truly here,
and with it all the fun activities the changing seasons bring.
With our newsletter, it is our goal to provide useful
information and tips to help you keep your life in balance, and to be
on call for you when you need help. We'd love to hear what you would
like to see in upcoming issues.
With pumpkin wishes and cider dreams,

8 Columbus
Day
Today honors
Christopher Columbus' first landing in the New World on October 12,
1492. He actually landed in the Caribbean, not on the US mainland.
Despite all the controversy of who "discovered" North America
(Native Americans, Nordic Explorers, etc), Columbus did in fact
discover the New World for the Europeans, who previously thought the
world was flat and ended in the Atlantic Ocean.
19 National Mammography Day
Part of National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, today is meant to build breast cancer awareness and
promote access to screening. If you're over 50 (or over 40 if you have
risk factors--talk to your doctor), be sure to schedule your annual
"big squeeze"!

Halloween
Ghosties,
ghoulies, monsters, and vampires. No stress, no holiday overload, no
inlaws. Just fun, kids, costumes, and chocolate. What could be bad?! If
you haven't done it in a while, carve a real pumpkin this year. All
that goopy mess makes for a great time!
Have other
dates this month that are important to you: birthdays, anniversaries,
etc.? Visit our Forget
Me Not page on our website to learn how QCS can make sure no
important date ever goes forgotten again.

Spice up your
Fall
|
|
When was the last time you
cleaned out your spice cupboard? This month is a great time, as we move
into holiday baking season.
This is often one of the most
neglected cupboards in the kitchen--if the spices are no
longer fresh, they belong in the trash. Most ground spices lose
their potency after 6 months, whole spices after a year. Whole cloves,
cinnamon and nutmeg last a bit longer, up to 2 years.
As you toss the old, plan to
add the following to your grocery list of "must haves":
- Cinnamon: can lower cholesterol and
blood sugar
- Garlic: can lower cholesterol and
blood pressure
- Thyme: known to soothe a cough
- Oregano: highest in antioxidants, may
fight cancers
- Rosemary: could prevent cataracts
- Sage: thought to improve memory
- Ginger: terrific for relief of nausea
- Fennel: eases indigestion
- Turmeric: slows spread of cancer cells
As you buy new spices, write
the purchase date on the lid with a Sharpie, or circle the expiration
date. Each Fall, when it's time to bake your first pie of the season,
take a look at the dates and update as needed.

magazine.)

October 31st
is looked forward to by some and dreaded by others.
You may love
to decorate your front porch, while others get out of the house to
avoid the incessant ringing of the doorbell.
Here are some
pointers to make the most (or least) of the holiday.
Children's Safety
- If
your child is going trick or treating, plan to go along.
- Bring
a flashlight.
- Avoid
dark costumes that are hard to see. If your child's costume is dark
colored, be sure to have reflective tape on shoes and on the candy
basket.
- There
are great pointers and a fun interactive quiz for kids on the
Hershey's website at http://www.hersheys.com/trickortreats/
Homeowner Safety
- Be
sure that your home décor isn't an obstacle course. Make paths clear and if cords or
pipes lay across the path, mark them with reflective tape.
- Avoid
making your haunted mansion too scary for smaller children. The object is not to traumatize
kids, but to enhance their experience.
- Be
sure to have plenty of candy, and don't be stingy! If you are
giving out small items, buy 2 pieces for each child.
If you choose
not to partake in this holiday for personal or religious reasons, keep
your cars in the garage, turn off all lights in front of your home and
keep quiet. The chances are you
will escape the "trick" portion of the evening by making it
appear that no one is home.
