As we head back to school and into Fall, I hope you can
take a moment to remember the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and its
devastating effects. While no longer daily news, two years later the
people of that region are still struggling mightily and charities can
still really use your help. If you've never been to the Crescent City,
this is a great time to go--the weather's perfect, attractions are
reopened, and they need your tourism dollars more than ever. Let us
know if we can help you plan the perfect trip.
With our newsletter, it is our goal to provide useful
information and tips to help you keep your life in balance, and to be
on call for you when you need help. We'd love to hear what you would
like to see in upcoming issues.
With a Jazz song in my heart,
Ellen Lovelace, Founder and President

September
Calendar

3 Labor
Day
Labor Day, the
first Monday in September, is a tribute to the contributions workers
make to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
(source: Department of Labor) Ironic, isn't it, that now it's a huge
shopping day, when workers have to work instead of celebrating!
11
Patriot Day
Remember the
brave victims of September 11, 2001, on this day. The flag is flown at
half-staff, and there is a national moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.
Eastern time. This day represents the greatness of America, be sure to
commemorate it in your own way.
12
Rosh Hashanah
The
celebration of the Jewish new year begins at sundown tonight. Ring in
the year 5768 by eating honey to ensure a sweet new year!
17 Citizenship Day/Constitution Day
Observes the
anniversary of the US Constitution being signed in 1787. President
Harry Truman established the day to give recognition to new American
Citizens, with celebrations to impress the privileges and
responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. Truly, did you know September was
such a patriotic month?!
The holiest day of the year in the
Jewish religion, the day of atonement begins at sundown on the 21st,
and is a day of reflection and fasting.
Fall
arrives early this morning. Have you forgotten exactly why
leaves change color? Click here!

Back to
School!

Can you believe school is
back in session? Where did the
summer go?
Try these tips to simplify the new school year:
- Ease your children into a routine:get
them to bed at the same time every night.
- Shop for school supplies with your
child, they will enjoy helping to make decisions.
Manage the mornings:
- Predictability and routine are key to reducing morning
stress.
- Do as much as possible the night before: make lunches and
set out clothes, pack book bags.
Make rules
during the school year:
- Homework before TV or play?
Whatever you decide, consistency will promote good study
habits.
- Keep computers in central locations, such as the family
room or kitchen. This
should discourage playing games or chatting with friends at
homework time.
- Have family dinner time: it's a great way to learn
what your child has going on in their world. And keep the TV
off.
Snacks:
- Keep healthy snacks at home that are ready to go: yogurt,
cheese, bowl of fruit.
Snacks with high sugar content are rapidly metabolized,
leaving your child hungry and less able to focus.
Remember, QCS is here to
assist if you need supplies, groceries, or errand running, freeing you
up to focus on your student's needs.

Tired of your
décor, but think it's too expensive to redecorate? There truly are ways
to give your home a quick pick-me-up that will not be a budget
buster.
Try thinking
about seasons instead of specific holidays. Just by changing 2 or 3 items in your
kitchen or family room, you can provide your home with a tweak of décor
and a fresh new feeling for the season.
As Autumn is just around the corner,
here are some ways to change the feel in your home:
- Drape ropes of
fall-colored leaves or foliage above window casings, doorways or
stair banisters.
- Change
placemats, tablecloth, scatter rugs, door mats, a picture or two.
Add potted plants that last for several weeks (chrysanthemums are
great for fall).
- Place
gourds, miniature pumpkins, and colored corn on a large platter or
bowl for a new centerpiece.
- Take
a walk and pick up a variety of colored leaves that have
fallen. Arrange the leaves in an old picture frame and
presto, you have new artwork to hang on a wall. If you have several sizes of
frames, you can make a collage by using a variety of leaves and/or
colors.
A money saving
tip is to buy sale items as stores change from season to season. Right now, summer items are going on
sale as stores begin to stock up for fall. So grab those summer sale items in
preparation for next year's décor change!
